Guest speaker Doug Jewell West Midlands Asbestos Support Group

Doug explained the reasons why the group was formed and what it does. As well as campaigning to prevent the future use of asbestos in the UK & abroad, getting councils to identify buildings with asbestos in them, they also offer help and support to people affected by asbestos to fill forms in and make their last days a bit better.

It is very difficult to find Insurance Companies to compensate victims of cancer, there needs to be an Insurer of Last Resort. Asbestos support needs to be kept in the public domain and the TU movement is vital to help with this. At present there is no public funding into Mesothelioma, need to keep campaigning to request government funding.

Trades Councils can write to their councils asking what action they are taking to identify asbestos in their buildings.

A donation of £25 was made to the group.
